Lunch Break Shopping – October Week 1

7 Oct

So I am a self admitted shop a holic and there is nothing better than shopping during your lunch break.  Not only do you get to get out of the office for a fun activity but it feels like you have some really time off.  I am a quick shopper and this is why lunch break shopping works for me but if you are a tentative shopper, examining all of your purchases, evaluting etc this will not work for you.

Monday October 4th I went to JoAnn Fabrics to pick up some elastic for a tutu that I am making for Luna Jane ( tutorial on this coming soon) and I found so many great Fall home items as amazing prices.

My Favorites are

White 10″ Funkin – such a cute different spin on Pumpkins.  The best thing about this pumpkin is that it is carvable but it would be great uncarved as a fall decoration that can stay up until Thanksgiving.  I think this would look great with other gourds of different sizes piled in the middle of a dining room table.  Different and Chic – $9.99

Holiday Inspirations-31.5″ Stacked Pumpkin Door Greeter – I actually purchases the Turkey version of this door hanger (not available online :() but these quilted door hangers are a really cute alternative to a fall wreath.  – $7.49 at that price who can resist.  These came in multiple different designs, haunted houses, pumpkins and turkeys

Scarecrow on a Stake – These are not available online but in the store they have lots of really cute scarecrows in many different designs that are on a stake that would look really cute in a garden or in a pot of mums.  They were on sale for $4.99 which is just crazy

All in all I was very shocked and surprised and my finds at Jo Ann fabrics, you should check it out…it is not just for people who sew or old ladies 🙂

Wednesday October 6th – I was supposed to go and return some horrendously unflattering sweaters at Old Navy during my break but I decided to go to the mall instead.  I went to:

Forever 21 which is one of my fave stores for accessories and super trendy items.  This shopping trip I was on the lookout for basic items for layering and new accessories. These are the items that i found

Basic V Neck Long Sleeve and Short sleeve tees for layering in black and white – these are great under long cardigans, shrugs jackets etc.  You can’t have a great look without a good foundation and these are essential.  They are super cheap ($4.80 to $6.80) and come in lots of colors

Sweet Flower Beanie – This was one trend that I thought I could not pull off but I was mistaken.  It looks super cute when I tried it on in the store I had curls that day that I did with hot rollers. – $6.80

Leopard Lint Roller – I couldn’t resist and at only $2.50 what a great find

Filigrie Stapler – This is such a cute item and it is pretty heavy so it doesn’t seem like it will break very easily.  I definitely have the cutest stapler in the office now – $3.80 This would make a super cute gift as well.

Bejeweled Tweezers – These are absolutely to die for.  Such a cute item and only $1.80! I can’t even get a soda for that price.  I bought a few pairs for little Christmas surprises.  Really cute impulse buy but they kind of hurt your fingers if you hold them a certain way.

On my way out of the mall I couldn’t help but stop in at Sephora as well.  I can’t ever go into the mall without walking in and I needed a few things. Here is what I got

Sephora Nano Eyeliner in Midnight Black and Chocolate – $5 These little eyeliners are great for your lower eye.  I only wear liquid eyeliner on top so these look really smokey and smudgey on bottom which I love.

Sephora Mono Eyeshahow in dark brown $12 – These eyeshadows are a great value.  They last forever and they stay on well during the day.  I would suggest against any of the ones with the silver glitter, it falls under your eyes and looks like you have intentionally put glitter under your eyes…not a good look unless your are 13 in the 90s. This would be a great start to try out a smokey eye if you are not a fan of black smokey eyes.  Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist did a great tutorial on how to achieve a smokey eye and you could use the concept with brown tones as well for a sexy subdued look.

Sephora Blush me Mono in Apricot – $12 This blush is great for the price the only issue I have is that its a little glittery…I kind of feel like I am back in the days of body glitter

Murad Acne Treatment Concealer – $21 I know a little pricey but I just started getting breakouts on my chin…I know what is that about! So I asked the consultant what would be a good concealer to use, she suggested this one b/c it has salicylic acid in which is a huge acne fighter so we will see if this clears my breakouts while covering them up too

Hope you enjoyed the reviews of the products I bought while out and about on my lunch break…I guess I get around to returning those sweaters one day 🙂

Decorating for Fall

1 Oct

Fall is my favorite season and Halloween is my favorite holiday.  There is something about the smell of spice pumpkin and cinnamon in the crisp windy air that makes me feel refreshed and excited for the upcoming season.  Fall is also my favorite season to decorate my house in mainly because I love the color combos of the fall, really rustic homey colors but also the fact that not all items are cliche fall.  you can do some really tasteful things without putting scarecrows and jack o lanterns all over. Here are some of my ideas.

Plant Mums -mums are a traditional fall flower.  I love the look of them and with the great fall colors that there are to offer you can really create a great scheme in your flower beds…Don’t have flower beds? No problem.  Invest in a clay pot and plant a mum plant there, it will be just as festive and really easy to keep up.  My favorite color are the brick red ones mixed with orange and yellow.  Most hardware stores will have plants which will range anywhere from about $6-$12 depending on where you go.

Buy Pumpkins – Pumpkins are not just for carving, try getting a few pumpkins in odd numbers (it makes for better arranging) and different shapes and sizes and cluster them around your door our in your flower beds.  If you don’t carve them they will last a long time about a month or so. If you have little ones that are not quite ready to carve try letting them pick out their own pumpkin and having them paint a face on it.  It will be a great project and if its small enough it can be kept inside where your little ones can adore their creation until you put up Christmas decorations.

Light an Autumn Scented Candle – There are some really great autumn scented candles out there.  The most popular will be spiced pumpkin.  Many lines carry a scent like this but I like Yankee Candle‘s Harvest scent, its slightly spicy with cinnamon and has undertones of pumpkins but there are some other mysterious scents in there that make this candle unique.  You can buy these candles online or in one of their many retail stores. Depending on what size you get they will range from about $15 and up.

Get a Fall flavored coffee or cocktail.  Most coffee shops like Starbucks or CC’s offers some sort of Pumpkin Latte that is sure to get you in the fall mood.

If you’re not in the mood yet take a look at the items below…they should get you in the mood for a fall breezy site with a little bit of apples and cinnamon in the air.

Adult/Couples/Maternity Halloween Costume Ideas

15 Sep

After my post a few weeks ago about kids Halloween costumes I got a request to do a post about Halloween costume suggestions and ideas for adults, couples and preggos so I decided to run with it.  The Most popular costumes this year will include Alice and Wonderland characters, Avatar characters and vampires a la Twilight Saga.

Adult/Slutty  – If you don’t want to be a “Slutty ________” then most online costume stores are not for you.  But if you do there are some really fun/sexy costumes if you have the body and money for them.  Some of my favorites include Rainbow Bright, Princess Jasmine and the Sailor but there are litterally 1000s of these types of costumes all over the internet…simply type Sexy Whateever you want to be” into a Google search and you will find what you are looking for. Also good news is that most of these types of places carry plus sized costumes now so if you are not a size 2, you can still look hot on Halloween.

I love the idea about really iconic costumes that people recognize put are not mass marketed, so you really stand out at a party b/c there is no one in the same costume.  I saw a cool costume for a Dharma Initiative Worker from Lost that was so great.  Making a Smruf/Smurfette costume would be really cute especially with the new movie coming out.  They have Smurf costumes online but they are kind of cheesy.  I also really like costumes that reference people from our generation would remember Doug Funnie, Rugrats, Wild and Crazy Kids etc.  can’t be originality

Couples – There are 100s of cliche costumes for couples, Ragedgy Ann and Andy, Salt and Pepper, Wilma and Fred Flinstone, but some of my favorites include really off the wall stuff, Doug Funnie and Patty Mayonnaise would be great.  I also saw some funny gay couple costumes, The Ambiguously Gay Duo Ace and Gary Costume is great and would be sure to get you noticed at your party Mario and Luigi would also be great.  Forrest and I were Sweeny Todd and Ms. Lovett a few years ago, we made our costumes but now they offer costumes for it.  I wore a  beer maid costume and carried a rolling pin and Forrest wore a pair of gray suit paints, a pirate shirt, black pirate vest, black wig with white stripe but the bloddy towel in his belt made the costume.

Preggers – Having a great costume for Halloween while pregnant is a challenge. There are the cliche items, Bun in the oven, barefoot and pregnant, pregnant nun etc.  I would suggest painting your stomach to incorporate it into your costume if you can.  Many sites offer maternity Halloween costumes if you must but I would suggest being creative and making something yourself.  Parents magazine has a great article with ideas and real life photos that are great for inspiration.  The “mother of pearl” is to die for. But some of these “costumes” could be done really easily and inexpensively.

Good Luck and Have Fun!!!!!

Cutest Winter Hats for Baby

7 Sep

As most of you know I live in Louisiana which stays pretty warm until December or January.  My kids usually don’t “need” a winter hat until Christmas time but snuggly hats have always been one of my favorite baby/kid accessories.  There are so many cute styles to choose from that make any outfit even cuter.

Here are a few that I have found that I think are super cute and would be a great addition to any fall or winter wardrobe no matter how long it will be until my kids will be able to wear their hats.

Children’s Place

  • Happy Doll Hat – Great colors that could work well with any outfit.  Love the braided pigtails on this hat too…super sweet while still being fun. (This is the one that I bought for Luna Jane) $8.50 It comes in pink and purple
  • Dude Hat – This is a ultra cool skull cap with “Dude!” knit into the base of the hat.  Very Punk to go along with flannel shirts that are super hot for kids right now.  $6.50

  • Owl Sweater Hat – This hat is TO DIE FOR.  owls are a hot trend right now and you can find them in all things from women’s jewelry to home decor items.  This knit hat is a great pink color that would look adorable with any outfit.  How can you resist. Right now its on sale for $10
  • Pumpkin Sweater Hat – This hat is great for fall. It would work well for boy or girl.  Such a cute idea making the entire hat a pumpkin.  This would be a great gift for a new mom that is about to deliver or for a baby that is too small for a real Halloween Costume.  Right now its on sale for $10

Baby Gap

  • Animal Inspired Sweater Hats – Baby Gap does this really cute line of hats for babies that are animal inspired.  Super cute and functional.  They would also work well for babies that are too small for Halloween Costumes or for parents that don’t want to go all out for Halloween.  Some of the really cute ones are the Giraffe, Zebra, Pig, Cow and Penguin.  They are all $16.50

If none of the above site’s have what you are looking for check out http://www.beaniedesigns.com/ This site has so many different styles of hats for newborns and toddlers.  Some of my favorites include

  • Organic Cotton Cupcake Hat – $32.00 A little pricey but it would make such a great photo and the neutral tones would make it so easy to work into any wardrobe/outfit.
  • Organic Cotton Multi Colored Stocking Cap – $32.00 Super cute for newborn photos and fall outings.  I would be careful with this hat if its being used as a day to day hat…may be a strangulation hazard…not sure though.
  • Fruit and Veggie Hats – They do an entire line of fruit and veggie inspired hats.  These hats start at $24.00 and they have lots of different options for boys an girls.  The green apple and strawberry are my favorite.

If you haven’t heard of Etsy.com its a great place for all different sorts of handmade items.  There are some great baby/kid winter hats if you look. Also another great thing about Esty is that you are supporting and artist and you will receive a handmade item that is truly unique.  These types of hats make great newborn photos I am not sure how these will hold up for everyday or frequent use. Here are a few designers that I love for this:

Halloween Costume Ideas

1 Sep

Halloween has to be one of my favorite holidays!   I always pride myself on finding really cute and different costumes for myself and my kids.  I have 2 kids Bailor who is 4 and Luna Jane who is 7 months.  With Bailor I have already had my chance to dress him up as I wanted.  I am now overidden by his own choices of super heros and other cliche halloween costumes.  With Luna Jane I am able to explore the possibilties of ridiculously cute girly baby costumes.

If you haven’t purchased halloween costumes online before BEWARE because they can be really expensive but some are worth while others are not.  While most main stream kids stores offer halloween costumes at reasonable prices these costumes can be overdone and you may see many duplicates while trick or treating or attending your Halloween parties.  The Children’s Place, Baby Gap and Pottery Barn are usually great places to get started looking for ideas when it comes to cute kids Halloween costumes.

If you want something a little more specific or high end try costume sites like http://www.buycostumes.com/ or http://www.halloweenexpress.com/tom-arma-costumes-c-353.html which carries 100s of costumes from movies, cartoons, stories and more.  This site also carries all sizes from infant to plus sized.  My favorites from these sites are the Lobster, Lil’ Monster and the Baby Blossom.

These types of costumes normally run about $50 but make for great photos and get lots of compliments.

Another option is making your costumes.  This is really great if you have ideas in mind.  I was thinking about doing a cupcake costume for Luna and found some great sites that give you ideas on how to make specific types of costumes.  Coolest Homeade Halloween Costumes is a great resource.  Keep in mind that homemade costumes always run the risk of looking homemade but can come out really great and be a real conversation starter.

I hope I have inpired you to get creative and think outside of the box when purchasing or making you and your kids Halloween costumes this year.  You only get a few years to dress your kids ridiculously…take advantage of it!
